Yesteryear Cyclery was founded in 1919 by Adriano Camara, a Portuguese carpenter who emmigrated to the United States with very little money but an incredible desire to succeed. He settled in New Bedford, Massachusetts, a New England seacost town filled with other Portuguese tradesmen. After a short period of hard work and saving, Adriano was able to purchase a used automobile. It was the "roarin 20's" and he was one of the few auto owners in the entire city. Cars were so scarce that Mr. Camara would give people rides for a nickle
( called a "jit" ) ... thus evolved the "jitney service" , the predecessor of the taxicab.

One day while his "cab" was empty, he spotted a friends car parked in front of a small retail establishment which had a red flag flying out front. At that time, a red flag signified that the business was for sale and being auctioned off. Adriano parked his car and entered the smokey building in anticipation of speaking to his friend. Mr. Camara could not speak English nor could his friend. The business for sale was a hardware store that sold pets, fishing poles, garbage barrells and a "few" bicycles.

When he entered the store, the auction was nearing a conclusion. Adriano saw his friend across the room and raised his hand to wave hello, not realizing that he had placed what was to become the closing bid of $700. After hearing "once, twice, three times.....sold"... he was informed, by his friend , that he had just purchased the business !

Over 80 years and 2 generations later, the business still continues under the ownership of the Camara family. Through 3 wars, good and bad times.. the family has run this business with the same kind and caring professionalism started in 1920. Yesteryear Cyclery, Inc. is the oldest cyclery in New England currently owned and operated by Adriano's grandson, Kim S. Camara. Kim has been in the bicycle trade over 40 years, taking time out only to attend college.

The Yesteryear Cyclery, Inc. prides itself on 3 quality franchises ; Schwinn, Cannondale and Giant. The cyclery stocks and sells a complete line of road, mountain, hybrid, comfort, BMX, juvenile and exercise bicycles. We have a large modern showroom with over 150 new bicycles on display at all times. Yesteryear cyclery features the most updated, full service department with factory trained mechanics, in all of New England. Most owners of other area bicycle shops were trained in our very service department !!!!. Yesteryear has been the receipient of many prestigious awards in the bicycle industry including the "Top 100 Dealers in the Country" award, Motobecane's, "Largest moped dealer in the United States" as well as being a multiple winner of Schwinn's 500 and 1000 club !!!
